Fins of the Bay
From our fins of the Bay series, this T-shirt depicts a profile of a well known bottlenose dolphin individual in the Bay of Islands: Ripper! Number 001 in the current Far North bottlenose dolphin catalogue, Ripper is an older male with a personality, known to push others around to get what he wants.
This design is an exact profile of Ripper’s dorsal fin as of March 2020. The TriOceans team keeps track of bottlenose dolphin numbers in the Far North using the unique marks on each fin to identify individuals (learn about photo-identification here).
All TriOceans images are taken at distance with zoom lens (400mm) under DOC permit or contracted research, following the Marine Mammal Protection Act (1978) and Marine Mammal Protection Regulations (1992).
